The iTunes downloads program is the most popular digital online music service by a mile. It has the biggest selection out of the truly legal services.
There is no subscription fee - initial or monthly. You can download the software for free.
The neat thing about iTunes is that you can play any mp3 (music file) on its player, not just the ones downloaded with its software. There is, however, a charge of 99 cents per song download.
Generally it is more cost effective if you get a subcription based service with another digital service; i.e., pay a certain amount of money per month, and go for unlimited downloads. Unfortunately iTunes does not offer that type of service. There are some others that do, however. You can find them here.
If you do download a song you can "burn" the song (copy it on to a CD) as many times as you want.

This would be if you can find a copyright song on iTunes that you cannot find on Napster, Rhapsody or Musicnow.
Another good use for this would be if you plan to do less than ten (10) downloads per month. If you go this route it would be a good idea for you to make sure that the same download is not offered on Wal-mart.com, which offers downloads for 88 cents each, or Amazon.com, which offers some free downloads. Also keep in mind that while Rhapsody offers 99 cent tunes with its non-unlimited service, some songs you can find for just 49 cents each.
Although it will never hurt to play any song on iTunes, there are some cirumstances whereby you should not use iTunes to download songs. Generally it would be best for you not to download more than 10-15 downloads per month without burning them. It is much more cost-effective to use other services.
If you are trying to download a popular song, say "Say It Right" by Nelly Furtado, it be best not to download that from iTunes. Instead, download it in a free trial period from Napster, Rhapsody or Musicnow.
